Across many other indian blogs, I am observing that entrepreneurism is being associated with (or related) to the personal risk and/or risk of invested money. There is a fundamental flaw in the chain of thinking. And this fundamental flaw comes from our misunderstanding of the true meaning. We take the literal meaning of the definition and fail to put entrepreneurship in proper context.

The central premise of entrepreneurism is about “risk of the idea”. The risk is associated with whether the idea solves any problem, how that idea can be executed, whether a business model can be derived out of it, or whether it can be sustained profitably. The basis of entrepreneurship does not stand on pillar of personal risk and risk of capital. These two aspects are just the enablers or facilitators. They do not, cannot, and will not drive entrepreneurship. If that were the case, then all angel investors and venture capitals would be called entrepreneurs. Buffett takes personal risk and capital risk by putting money into companies (many times distress and depressed companies), he should be called entrepreneurs! Do we call them entrepreneurs?

Just because one takes personal risk or invests money does not make him/her entrepreneur. Otherwise we should call stock market traders, owners of street corner shop, and vegetable vendors as entrepreneurs. Even a college student can be called an entrepreneur. He spends money, time, and takes personal risk by spending 3 to 4 years in college not knowing what kind of job he will get after graduating.

History shows us that entrepreneurs are successful when they focus on core problem, when they focus on a unique solution, and solve that problem in better way. Here unique solution does not necessarily mean innovation, and better could be cheaper, faster, simpler, ease, etc.

Anybody who starts a blog is not an entrepreneur. However, a blogger can be considered as an entrepreneur provided an individual is using blog as a medium to promote a unique idea. That idea could be addressing a problem. It could be providing solutions to that problem. If there is a need for it, than the blog will become popular, and end up being a profitable venture. The individual is addressing the core premise, i.e. risk of the idea, focused on problem, and solution to it. I would call them blogopreneur.

Let us take an example. There is a lack Indian blogs that provide opinions and viewpoints, based on individual thoughts, facts, data-driven analysis, and well researched posts. If an individual decides to focus on that topic and makes a profitable business venture out of it, then that blogger can be called as an entrepreneur. However, starting a blog to rewrite the news, or republishing the information is not entrepreneurial. They are just bloggers and not blogopreneurs.

Therefore, I believe entrepreneurship is not limited to taking personal risk or capital. It is about providing a unique solution to a problem. If that solution is unique, and there is need for it, and benefits its end users, it will automatically turn out to be a profitable venture.

We fail to identify the difference between business venture and entrepreneurial venture. It has been ingrained in our lexicon that any business venture is entrepreneurial. Among all of the tech startups that have mushroomed in last two years, ninety percent of them are attempting a business venture. The gist is there is no entrepreneurism associated with these ninety percent of tech startups. This is a topic in itself which I will discuss sometime in future.

That is the power of her existence. She is truly divine in disguise of human. But it is equally important that society runs on two wheels, both the wheels must be equally strong to run smoothly. Although legally and theoretically women is now recognized as the social equal of man, but the institutions of caste, the patriarch family and the prevailing value system are still surcharge on them due to the spirit of male dominance or what we call male chauvinism.

But it is the power of emotion, which is the evocation of the infinite faculties of women representing her ability to scale the height of thought, love, beauty, care, affection, sacrifice and the list is endless. She is the magnificent creation of God, a multifaceted personality with the power of benevolence, adjustability, integrity and tolerance. She is the companion of man gifted with equal mental faculty protection and provider of the embodiment of love and affection. The role given to the women in society is measuring rod and true index of its civilization attainment. She is the builder and molder of a nation’s destiny. Though delicate and soft as lily, she has a heart, far stronger and bolder than of man. She is the supreme inspiration for man’s onward march.

If one happens to turn the pages of history (women like Mother Teresa, Kalpana Chawla, Sushmita Sen and so many worth appreciating)role of women stand out in resplendent letters. As she not only has proved her abilities as soft, delicate, emotional and caring mother, wife, sister, nurse but also she is the one who has attained the heights of achieving success in the field of Aeronautical sciences. She is spreading the message of being equal to men by achieving success in almost all walks of life which earlier was considered foreign to women’s nature and attitude.

It is hard fact that when men get name and fame and recognition it takes them to chauvinistic attitude, and they start considering themselves as the unconquerable monarchs, but look at the women’s modesty and generosity she accepts this looked upon attitude not to challenge the world of men but accepts it as a trifle hurdle where like other spheres she has to mark her presence, which is yet to be discovered, which is yet to have spread some vestiges of hope. Why shouldn’t she be considered equal to men? Why? After all she plays great part in the progress of any country as the mental and physical contact of women with life is much more lasting and comprehensive than of men. “For the hands that rocks the cradle rules the world”. In women is hidden the revolutionary energy which establish paradise on this earth. She is less selfish; more dedicated to duty and have much potency than men by nature. Only elevating presence of women on the top can help bring in a semblance of order in the present situation, where she is looked upon as the mere, pitiable, weak, helpless and dependent creature. Not only this she is emotional, affectionate, caring and yet firm and is the perennial source of aspiration for man himself in the odyssey of life. Without the emancipation of women, existence of Adam was meaningless. She is the cultural backbone of the society. She is the incarnation of love and existence of men’s very presence.

This is the era of women. They are gradually emerging as a force in social cultural as well as political fields of the country. The tolerance, perseverance, inner strength, insight efficiency of a responsible and good being women help in the governance of the country on wider scale and of family in narrower sense. If men have sight women have insight. She has now occupied a pivotal position and has achieved eminence in different fields. Obstacles, yes obstacles are there in her venture of establishing her presence felt as equal to men but she continues to bind it with hope, optimism, happiness and virtue together as by an indissoluble chain. It is her power only that sets her apart from men on the lower rungs of the evolutionary ladder. Rather it will not be an exaggeration if it is said that it is only such qualities, which moulds her personality to a God like height.

But she is the other half of men. She has got her existence from Adam’s shoulder bone not to forget the evolutions of the first Homo sapiens. Men and women are like body and soul. Like a body without a soul implies a rotting carcass, left to waste away in to nothingness. It is the sexual character which turns breathless life into an otherwise inanimate piece of clay, transforming it into a living piece of creation. It means it is through their complementary relationship only life is generated, so where is the space left to discriminate between them. There are just small oblivions which need to be replaced with shining world which should echo concrete jingles of equal and hormonal relationship between men and women. After all nothing is perfect.

How Did I Become an Entrepreneur?

I have been asked by many of my friends and colleagues the question:

“How did you manage to leave the good old Hitech life, with a very comfortable and respected position as an executive, to start your own company and achieve success? Can you give us any tips?”

Although now a days, with the economical crisis and uncertainty, it may not be bad to be “stuck” in such a job working for a large company. Personally, after a long and demanding Hitech career as an employee, with a few “almost” huge startup exits, I have decided that it is time to take my destiny into my own hands and do the things that I like doing.

I have opened my own company (www.HitechStrategies.com) which helps many hitech startups and ventures to reach success and at the same time provides me with a nice steady income; I have become an entrepreneur; I have founded and joined several startup ventures as a part time partner or advisor; I have been teaching entrepreneurship and international marketing at several educational institutions (including Tel Aviv University’s MBA program); I coach several dozen entrepreneurs and CEOs of early stage startups; I connect investors and startups…I will stop here, I think you got the point.

As you can see, I enjoy a very diversified and exciting living, very different from the long days at my office as a hitech executive.

As for tips, it is difficult to provide a school-book recipe, but I can say that each person has to find their own niche that they feel good about and provide value. It does take some guts and entrepreneurship and a will power to take a risk and start over, even at a cost of having a lower income temporarily. Here are some of my retrospective insights:

Networking

One big tip is to take yourself out of the office and start networking and reconnect with friends and professional colleagues. This is usually the first step in exposing yourself to new ideas and opportunities. Find out what others are doing; maybe even find a partner or a venture to join. As I think back to my career, I sometimes wonder how I got myself so entangled in my day to day work, that I was almost unaware of things that were going on outside my domain. Not to mention the relationships and contacts that were neglected.

There have been many articles and a lot of buzz about networking in recent years. I find it quite straight forward and not as elaborate as some make it to be. Of course, not everyone is going to be a networking Guru or what Malcolm Gladwell, in his great book “The Tipping Point” called a “Connector”. But, even so, just meeting up with old acquaintances and going to several industry and networking events, will make a huge difference. You will be surprised how talking to people outside your daily work circle, will broaden your horizons and uncover new ideas and opportunities.

Training

Another good tip is to enroll in one of the many entrepreneurship course and forums that are out there. If you are like me and have worked as an employee all your life, you probably have never opened your own business, or issued an invoice to a customer. You can of course Google and read about everything in the Internet, but I recommend that you take a course that will give you an overview of everything you need to know to start your own business or startup company. This will include things such as: the legal aspects of establishing a company, business or a founders partnership agreement, fund-raising and funding sources (there are many government incentives to help you start without spending your own money), accounting and financial aspects of running a business, tax issues, IP and patent filing, creating a business plan, building a team, marketing and sales (online and offline), etc.

These courses are usually short (3-4 months), not time consuming (can be done on a one evening a week basis) and not expensive. The key benefit, other than the studies, is that you will hear from entrepreneurs’ own personal experience, talking about how they did it, and you will meet many people like you who are thinking about or are already starting their own companies.

Follow your aspirations

Each one of us has a special unique set of qualities, talents, knowledge and experience that we can foster to excel in that or the other. We are usually good at what we do or have done, but some of us also have dreams and aspirations to do other things that we have not had the time or the opportunity to try. Others feel they have exhausted their occupation and are looking for something that will make them more excited and fulfilled. Well, it is never too late to try something new. What is the worst that can happen? You might not succeed, but at least you know you tried. And, you can always go back to what you were doing before. Or, you may actually be doing what you really like and always wanted to do; that is already a great feeling. And yes, you might even really succeed in it.

Be patient and keep at it

Starting a new venture is not easy; it takes a lot of work and passion. And, it does not happen overnight. So, you should be patient with yourself and not expect everything to go quickly and smoothly. In the beginning, you might need to live on no or very little income and even use up some of your savings. If you are not in a position to do that, you may elect to stay in your current job and to work on your startup during your off-work hours (nights and weekends) or you may change to a part time job. The key is to work through the challenges, move forward, step by step, and not to get discouraged on the way. If you keep at it, you will eventually reach your goals.

Do your homework; get help from experts

Like any business decision, before you are about to invest your time and resources to startup a new venture, you should do your homework. If you think you have a great idea (e.g. the next “Facebook” or “iPhone”), you should research your target market and competition. You need to validate that there is a real need for your idea and that it will have a distinct advantage over existing alternatives. You should talk to key opinion leaders and customers in your market in order to confirm this. Finally, you should create a business plan so you have a clear understanding as to what it takes to develop your product or service and how much funding will you need. If this is the first time you are doing this, you are better off getting help from experts or consultants who can do this (i.e. prepare a business plan) for you or with you, to ensure you are not making critical mistakes and that your venture has the maximum chances to succeed.

Finally, great rewards for your efforts

If you do decide to startup your own venture and you manage to get through the obstacles, you will realize some great benefits:

Being your own boss and in control of your life

Since I have become an entrepreneur, I can really focus on doing what I want and what I think can be beneficial to me or to my company (this is not usually the case if you are an employee). I am also fortunate to try many things that I have never had the time to do.
Being able to balance work, family and social life

Being an entrepreneur does enable you to be much more flexible with your time. You can make time for your family whenever they need you, spend more time with friends and take on hobbies. If needed, you can compensate for it by working at night after the kids went to bed or by simply working more efficiently.
Working from home

One of the main benefits of being independent is that you can work from home anytime you want and you don’t need to ask for your boss’s permission. I have set up a very comfortable fully equipped home- office, so I can choose to work from home and be very productive; I also avoid 1-2 hours of driving to/from work in traffic on any given day. Re-kindle all your friendships and professional contacts

Another great benefit is that I was able to enjoy more social time with friends and
colleagues and build my professional network; that helps a lot with generating leads and opportunities. Benefit from the fruits of your success

With in a year from the time I had started my venture, I managed to surpass the level of income that I had when I was working as an executive in a hitech company. I also have stocks in several startups that I hope will one day be worth millions.

For the newbie Internet business entrepreneur, here are the 10 most powerful unwritten rules that may well prevent you from ‘skidding into the ditch’. Make a point of reading through them monthly and remain focused on the road ahead!

First and foremost, Lets look at the advantages of creating and building an online income. Our place of work is open for business 24/7 so we can work when we want and for as long as we want. Many of our regular duties can be run on auto-pilot leaving us with more time for family, social and leisure activities. This situation offers a less stressful working environment, and to a certain extent we are in control of your own rewards. However, it is important to remember that there are few ‘Get-Rich-Quick’ schemes on the Internet. Look upon it in much the same way as you would if you were creating an offline business, which, in order to be sucessful, requires commitment and a positive attitude right from the offset, with scant reward in the early days.

Whilst it is important to have your mindset focused on a full-time successful online business, it is useful, especially early in your Internet career, as part of the learning curve, to try out a few programs in your spare time. Get the feel of the Internet marketing arena and at the same time learn a little about HTML, Scripts, creating attractive images and even building your first website! This can all be achieved as a ‘spare time’ sctivity. Don’t sack your boss till you have the confidence in your complete ability to earn regular income. There may be a lot to learn but, trust me, if you’re focused, it will be worth the effort.

NEVER.. get involved in ‘get paid to read email’ sites, they are scams and you wont earn a penny, and they won’t answer your emails of complaint! MLM too, or in fact any website telling you that your money will be doubled or trebled in a matter of days, or you will become rich overnight, are scams. Avoid them!! It’s not difficult to find bona fide traders on the Internet. Look for offline contact points. An address or telephone number is a good sign they are genuine. Another good test is to send them an email before you sign up to see how efficiently they reply. Avoid the ‘Get-Rich-Quick’ schemes. They don’t work!

Imagine you discovered a method of earning huge amounts of money on the Internet. Would you then offer to tell everyone about your ‘secret formula’? I don’t think so! You will no doubt come across those who will try to convince you they have found such a recipe, and no doubt offer to share it with you. Believe me it will cost you, not just financially but in wasted time too. Always shy away when you see the word ‘Secrets’, or see boasts of huge income!

Similarly, ask yourself this.. would a guy who says he’s earning several million dollars a year, bother to write and market an eBook describing how he did it? I think not! Go with your first instincs, they are usually quite accurate!

Dont pay too much attention to images of earnings checks or bank statements purportedly demonstrating how much the account-holder has earned, It is a simple task to create whatever you want with a little creativity. The same goes for letters of recommendation or testimonials. Anyone can write them or get their collegues to do so! They may con some, but don’t let it be you!

Think positive and stay focused at all times. If you were to take a close look at all the successful Internet marketers, who have made a great deal of money from their endeavours, you would find they have one thing in common! Dedication!! They are prepared to work hard and long to achieve their goals. They do not lose heart if everything doesnt come together today, and they are rarely influenced by the ‘quick buck’. I cannot stress this point often enough to you…

Be organised! Keep all your business activities logged and documents filed in the correct folders. Check your email accounts at least daily and file the important ones. Dont be frightened to name a file or folder with a long name (within reason). You should be able to access any file, folder, software or email within 30 seconds. So much time can be saved with a tidy desktop!

Stick to the basic etiquette of Internet Marketing. Don’t be tempted to send out high volume unsolicited email (spam). It won’t be worth the hassle believe me! Read the Terms and conditions section when you join a program and if you decide to sign up.. then adhere to those terms. You will make useful contacts during your Internet campaigns. Try not to ‘stand on toes’

Avoid leaving large amounts of funding in any online marketing or promotion website! Most websites have a strict policy on spamming and if you are ever accused (rightly or wrongly) of sending unsolicited emails, you are likely to have your account closed, which could result in you losing your funding too!

So that’s it! Not a set of rules… more a collection of simple guidelines which, if applied, will serve to make your Internet Marketing experience a safer and more enjoyable journey!

Know your business – Having a business plan is perhaps the most important part of business start-up. Lack of planning is the number one cause of business failure. A business plan is just that; a plan. It’s a blueprint of where you want to be in one, three, or five years, and a list of all expenses to get there, including personal expenses. What licenses, permits, and associated fees will be required? How much inventory to start with? Researching similar businesses, desirable locations, and area statistics are all part of a complete business plan. It should all be there, and following your plan is critical to success.

Know your product – Taking the time to fully understand your products or service will make you look more like an expert. Lean as much as you can and test your product for quality. Selling poor quality merchandise to earn a quick buck will do just that. But the bad reputation you gain from those transactions will detour customers away from doing business with you in the future.

Know your market – Make certain there is a market for your product or service before you dive in and commit. Can the area support your business? Is your area already saturated with similar businesses? With some business, saturation can be good. For instance, an area with an abundance of restaurants may bring more hungry people to that area. They know that if one restaurant is too busy, there may be another next door with ready seating.

Know your location – Location, location, location! If you are not accessible or visible to your potential customers, they will never find you. Choose a location which is suitable to your type of business. Also, make sure your signage is visible from a quarter mile away.

Know your competition – Competition isn’t always a bad thing. Take the time to introduce yourself to business neighbors offering similar products or services. Networking with other business owners can help bring more clientele into your area.

Know your customer – More than 50 percent of businesses will deal face-to-face with their customers. Good customer service is one of the most important qualities with any business. Of reasons customers leave a business, 15 percent of them stated they left because they didn’t like the quality, 15 percent didn’t like the price, and a whopping 70 percent left because they didn’t like the customer service. 96 percent of your customers with problems will never tell you they have a problem, they’ll just take their business elsewhere. Need I say more?

Know your finances – Keep all business receipts in one place and organize them into suitable categories. Use a worksheet to log all daily income and expenses. By looking at these worksheets daily, weekly, or monthly, you will keep better track of how your business is growing or losing and be able to determine your next step of action accordingly. How you keep your personal finances is a good demonstration of how you will financially manage your business. If you never balance your checkbook, find yourself continually in credit card debt, or are regularly late on your bills, it’s unlikely you will manage your company’s financial issues sufficiently. If this is the case, you may need to assign another person to control the financial decisions in your business.

Know loans! Avoid taking risky loans to fund your new venture. Unlike your home loan, where the loan is secured by real value, your business may never have real value unless you purchase the property your business is located at, so banks are reluctant to loan money for business start-up. So why do they? The truth is, they rarely do. Banks typically will require some form of guarantee; that is often your home or other personal property. If your business fails, you stand the chance of losing your property. Keep your business idea in proportion with the amount of money you have available. Only 27 percent of new business owners borrow money to start their business; try to put yourself into the remaining 73 percent.
